It is a beautiful day and I am going into a town called Stroud to see what it's like and look at their pottery. I have decided that I do not love exploring on my own mainly because it's nicer sharing it with others but that I do like the flexibility of going when and where I want and learning how to get places without the added pressure of having someone there. Come and visit. We will go on day trips a-plenty.
The school system here seems similar. In Maths, it all seems review so far. Owen's lessons are definitely easier, but he needed that. They have him writing with this special pencil and his handwriting has improved DRAMATICALLY! Plus, he's more into writing now - had no use for it last year. Finn's doing a lot more creative writing and in-depth answers to questions, just a lot more writing period and I find that to be fantastic. Hillcrest doesn't have them write enough. I love his English teacher. He is this typical really old guy who teaches English, but he is perfect and likes what he does. They're reading
Oliver Twist and Finn is really into it. The kids really like the two gym periods in the week and long recess; I can't say enough about that. And the school meal program is phenomenal. I would eat there everyday if I had the chance! Evan is really into history so far (and his teacher is American from Virginia), enjoying Maths, not so much in the languages (French/Spanish) but a lot of the kids have taken French since Infants (1st/2nd grade), I guess and he feels behind. Owen on the other hand is a French magnet. He can speak in simple sentences in three weeks and we can actually have a conversation! He's got my talent for that. Finn is hesitant to speak it, but understands the gist of what I say about 80% of the time.
Owen is making friends quickly and has kids call to him on the playground. Finn a bit slower because he really is my one who wants to fit in, plus it's hard to come into a class of kids who have been together for all of their schooling and it's the last year for him/them in the Jr. school. In hindsight, it may have been a better idea to have popped him up into year 7, but then he wouldn't have gotten the "big man on campus" experience and I do think that is more important because the Yr 6's do get privileges that the rest of the kids do not - bike safety, a week-long trip (like North Bay in Middle School), field trips. And really, next year, all the kids will be on the same level as new 7's and that will help and there will be many "new" kids who did not attend St. Ed's Jr. Evan got invited to two girls' birthday parties (they are having a joint party) at some night club until midnight on the High St. but we will be in France. Yesterday, I picked him up from school because he has so much stuff to carry on Tuesdays and all the boys were returning from the Jr school's fields where they go to play rugby - I think they had to walk. Anyway, Evan stopped at the car to drop off his gym kit and about 5 kids stopped to wait for him. It was very nice to see that since he is not a social butterfly. Although I have a suspicion that the boys had never seen a car as old as ours and stopped in amazement! Just kidding and yes, the car did start around noon. It's got my personality & is just not a morning car!
We have booked a place in the SE France in Perpignan which is near the border with Spain and Andorra for the half term break (10/18-11/2) from 10/20-10/29 and are planning on taking the Chunnel across then driving down with a stopover or two on the way there and back. We were going to try and hit Paris (not Hilton altho she may need a whack on the head) on the way back, but have decided to save that for later and fly or take the train there instead because we wouldn't need a car. Can I just say half term breaks are the best thing????? I am so excited to go! I have wanted to visit France since high school and 7 years of HS and college French is still swimming up there in my head. A bientot!
